After the much surprised Political Tsunami in 308, Gerakan has been facing grave threats from all rounds.
After Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon reigned the party, Gerakan after its establishment, had 1st time in the history lost the State Government of Penang.
To add salt to injuries, the heavyweight leaders of Gerakan such as Lee Kah Choon, Rhina Bhar, Tan Kee Kwong and the latest, Toh Kin Woon had decided to resign from the party.
No doubt as a party, Gerakan is one of the few parties which carries the noble ideologies of equality and nationalisms without looking at the race, religion and gender. However, the reality is that Gerakan has over the years, failed to champion the noble goals of we are the descesdants of Malaysia or Kita Anak Malaysia. In fact, Gerakan had shown itself to be a party which was based on professionals and non-bumiputras. In addition, it now can't even give the community a choice of non-chinese candidates in the General Election. Is it that the Chinese candidates of the party are much better than the non-Chinese in merits and securing the seat? This may not be the intention but creates unnecessary perspective in the Community.
Now, the grassroot of the party have even had the dilemma of whether to leave the Barisan Nasional for better future or not.
As a political party, Gerakan no doubt failed in its quest for political equality as it never succeeded in expanding the influence of the party or play a vital role in the formation of education or major policies of the Country.
If the party leaves Barisan National, it will have nothing left but to squeeze between Barisan National and Pakatan Rakyat in the next election. By doing so, it will prove itself to be irrelevant and replaceable.
Without a strong leadership and without proper strategies to woo over the support of Malays, Gerakan has no chance to survive in its own feet and this is a fact.
